Moros: Evolution of a Philadelphia-Based Death Doom Band
**Overview**
Moros is a prominent Death Doom band hailing from Philadelphia, formed in 2015 by Jay Dost (guitar, vocals), John Hauser (bass, backing vocals), and Drew Weston-Ball (drums) and known for their early sludge-influenced sound, the band infused punk elements into their music while focusing on local performances, short tours, and initial releases, including a demo and several split EPs. Moros Cemetery Hallucinations is an emblematic phrase associated with the band’s identity and creativity.
**Discography**
Their debut full-length album, *Weapon*, was released in 2019 under Hidden Deity. Following this release, the pandemic significantly impacted their activities, causing a temporary hiatus. During this period, they produced the self-released EP *High As Fuck and Ready to Die*. Over the years, Moros has gradually shifted away from their sludge origins toward a more profound extreme metal sound. Moros Cemetery Hallucinations embodies the evolution apparent throughout their discography.
**Artistic Direction**
According to Jay Dost, “We gradually sharpened our writing style and focused on a more deadly, Death Doom oriented sound.” As live music began to thrive again, Moros experienced a lineup change with the addition of drummer Mike Howard, whose impactful drumming led to their EP *Recrudescent Horror*, released in 2025 on Knife Hits. This release marked a transition, showcasing a stronger emphasis on Death and Black Metal influences.
**Latest Release**
In 2023, the band began writing for their latest album, *Cemetery Hallucinations*, resulting in 14 completed tracks, some reworked from earlier sessions. They shifted to a down-tuned guitar setup, departing from their earlier bass-and-guitar configuration. Recorded in summer 2024 at Gradwell House Studio in Haddon Heights, New Jersey, *Cemetery Hallucinations* represents the band’s first experience in a thoroughly professional studio environment, with all tracks recorded live alongside additional overdubs for guitar and vocals. Moreover, Moros Cemetery Hallucinations showcases the group’s most developed studio approach to date.
**Influences and Collaborations**
Moros draws inspiration from their life in Philadelphia as well as key influences such as Coffins, Autopsy, Bolt Thrower, Archgoat, and a variety of horror films. Members have previously contributed to projects such as Occult 45, Fight Amp, Sunburster, and Nauseator, and are currently involved with bands such as Rid Of Me, Krieg, Malguist, and ANTIHÆLIX.
*Moros Cemetery Hallucinations continues to push the boundaries of their genre, delivering an evolving sound that reflects their artistic journey and influences.*
