Bass is the demo that got Morella’s Forest signed. Recorded at The Main Sound in the fall of 1993 and produced by Pete Holiday, this five-song cassette found the Dayton, Ohio shoegaze outfit sharpening their identity, Sydney Rentz’s vocals hovering over walls of distortion, Shawn Johnson’s guitars smearing color across every frequency, and the McCorkle rhythm section locking in a groove that Tooth & Nail’s own handwritten listener feedback called “very groovy — cool bass sounds.” That feedback card is now underground legend: the label rated the music “above average,” praised its Medicine- and Curve-like qualities, and requested more information plus a first EP. They got signed. Two tracks here; Lush of Spring and Oceania, later appeared on the 1995 T&N debut Superdeluxe, with Oceania also surfacing on early Tooth & Nail sampler compilations. The remaining material has been out of print since the original cassette disappeared decades ago. Restored from the original demo tape and remastered for 2026 by Chris Colbert. New design by Cameron George. Limited to 100 first-run copies, housed in an eco-wallet in a resealable outer bag. First-ever official CD release.
