Description
Released in 2006, Surah 16 is an 18-minute single-track limited edition release by the experimental project Emerald Tablets recorded live at the Bowery Poetry Club, NYC. Formed by playwright Lauri Bortz and visual artist Mark Dagley. Taking its name from the ancient hermetic text attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, Emerald Tablets blends esoteric themes, spoken word recitations, and minimalist drone instrumentation within Abaton’s catalog of avant-garde sound art. This release takes its title and textual foundation from Al-Nahl (The Bee), the 16th chapter of the Quran. The text delivers warnings against polytheism, asserting that false idols create nothing, while praising divine providence and the natural wealth given to humankind. In this recording, the continuous recitation of these verses is framed as a hypnotic, meditative acoustic document rather than traditional religious worship. Spanning a continuous 18:08 runtime, the performance features Bortz and Dagley alongside Corbi Wright on flute, percussion/bells, and Judith Fleishman on harmonium. Together, the ensemble relies on repetitive vocal cadence, delicate acoustic textures, and sustained reed drone to establish an immersive, ritualistic atmosphere. By isolating the spoken text within a minimalist sonic frame, Emerald Tablets transforms hermetic text into a stark, thought-provoking listening experience. The release bridges spoken-word documentary, spiritual archaeology, and dark ambient sound art, serving as a notable artifact within Abaton’s roster of experimental pressings. Last copies!
