Description

A polymath force across Pop Art, novel writing, and Off-Off Broadway theater, Rosalyn Drexler consistently interrogates America’s fraught, dark love affair with popular culture. A pioneering figure whose proto-feminist Pop paintings culled from movie posters, pulp media, and tabloid culture were exhibited alongside Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, her work is held in major permanent collections including the Whitney Museum and the Walker Art Center. Beyond her seminal visual practice and her legendary early stint as professional wrestler Rosa Carlo (“The Mexican Spitfire”), Drexler is a formidable literary voice: author of acclaimed novels like I Am the Beautiful Stranger, a three-time Obie Award-winning playwright (Home Movies, The Writer’s Opera, Transients Welcome), and an Emmy Award winner for her television writing on Lily Tomlin’s “Lily”. While her dramatic works were previously anthologized in Abaton Book Company’s privately circulated Lost & Found audio drama set, this stand-alone cassette release isolates and shines a direct spotlight on the candid, 24-minute telephone interview conducted between Drexler and playwright Lauri Bortz. In this intimate exchange, Drexler reflects on her multifaceted creative process, her pioneering contributions to 1960s avant-garde NYC theater, her wrestling career, and her artistic philosophy. The release preserves a rare oral history from one of the last surviving titans of the downtown 1960s avant-garde.
