There are all sorts of reasons why people become musicians, with some simply fated to pursue the path. It’s not how they start out, however, rather than how they proceed that matters. LINNEA OLSSON is no exception, and this fact is reflected in the manner in which her debut solo album, AH!, unfolds. Stroking out low, mournful notes on her cello, layering them delicately upon one another before teasing out ‘Ocean’s’ melody on its higher strings, she sets a tone that predicts an album which might sit comfortably alongside the burgeoning post-classical / neo-classical movement. But to make such an assumption would be entirely wrong: LINNEA OLSSON rarely treads where one might expect.

Norwegian-born, Sweden-based singer-songwriter Ane Brun creates a dreamy, folk-based music. She looks back on her 10 year career and new double CD retrospective Songs 2003-2013. But she started out as a busker. There are thousands of them around the world: Musicians playing on street corners, in cafes and any other place an audience might stroll by and listen. Some of them are young musicians getting their music together, some just make their living as a busker, scrounging quarters and quid into something resembling a living. Few of them actually break through to become recording musicians. I can think of some, Kaki King, Portico Quartet, The Angels of Venice. Add to that small list Ane Brun. I talk to her about her 10 year career tonight on Echoes.
Highlights:
Ane Brun on her jazz Influences: I think my voice is influenced a lot by jazz singers, actually. I grew up with listening to vocal jazz a lot, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and the big legends. So I was singing along to like Aretha Franklin and Ella Fitzgerald and that kind of stuff.
Ane Brun on the melancholy of Scandanavian music: That’s true, it’s what we have. I, I think it’s the long winters, it might be, and also the Lutherism and all that stuff.
Hear Ane Brun talk about her music tonight on Echoes.

Old Growth play punk rock’n’roll and hold an appreciation for all those who blazed the way from buddy holly to dead moon. Science of Yabra is post punk that drives not unlike jehu. Both are from Portland. They also share a member and a recent european tour, for which this record offering was intended.
St Augustine’s Environmental Youth Crunch digs Woody Guthrie, CCR, swimming, camping, bikes, making their own fuel and beer, all outdoors Florida has to offer, and sings about Florida environmental politics. EYC plays pop punk rock. They talk about ideas important to them between songs-rare around here these days given the swell to embrace the nightlife and not the day we’ve got to navigate too. EYC steers through both fluidly and with purpose. They offer ideas and actions towards something heavy directly affecting us and they do it in their sweaty underwear. Let’s Ride is their first full length album. Let’s Ride our rusty bikes into the ocean. . .Let’s Ride on biodiesel touring throughout Florida. . . Let’s Ride in opposition to those Disney cowboy chumps on the cover in the rodeo to overdevelop EYC’s beloved state.
Orlando rippers, female vocals, giant alligators, fucks it up with crazed Florida hardcore thrash and great lyrics. Takes an Infest / Relics shovel to the face of Orchid. Pissed!
The underground railroad from St. Augustine to Richmond, VA finally comes to listeners in the form of TuberÕs split with the almighty Brainworms. Brainworms unleash two tracks on their 3rd split 7? in a year, one being Jays Big Date which is the zingiest of zingers yet by the band and the debut of Josh Small on guitar with the band. Track two is a cover of Rites of Spring Ð For Want Of, recorded at the same time as the live side of Which is Worse. Tubers, who have circuited the Florida punk scene in bands one might call spastic hardcore such as Twelve Hr. Turn, Solid Pony, and Environmental Youth Crunch, find a mellower spot to sit while not letting aggressive tendencies completely fall by the wayside. Tubers are the perfect complement for a party that wants to let loose, have fun, and, you know, maybe get a little weird on the dance floor.
Jacksonville crust / sludge duo, with a heavy ecological preservation vibe in the lyrics. Dark slow heavy sparsity of HIS HERO IS GONE, or SAMHAIN when the music is almost goth and mid-tempo rocking and BORN AGAINST during the heavy and mid-tempo riffs.
A vengeful follow-up to last years ÒRape, Slaughter, Slavery and VivisectionÓ 7Ó. JacksonvilleÕs Captive Bolt continue down a lyrical path of vegan and animal rights issues while blasting a hardcore punk sounds with a fresh and modernized reincarnation of Left for Dead. The power of the message here is only brought to the next level since the band teams up with esteemed author Gary Francione – a professor of law and philosophy at Rutgers University. He is a longtime vegan and writes and teaches about animal rights theory and animal law, as well about the relationship between the rights of humans and nonhumans. Gary contributions to this release are exclusive and recorded specifically to work thematically with Captive BoltÕs tracks.
Jr. Juggernaut is similar to the ’90s-tinged alt-rock of Cheap Girls, you’ll also like them if you like Pavement, Superchunk, the Foo Fighters, guitar solos, and things like that.
Jaya the Cat plays a mixture of Ska, Reggae and Punkrock, including Dancehall and Dub influences. The band, who moved from Boston, MA to Amsterdam, NL in order to tour Europe more extensively already toured with bands such as Sublime, Beatsteaks and Less Than Jake and knows how to bring the audience on the dance floor with their catchy rhythms and booze soaked lyrics that without a doubt invite the listener to having a good time.
Sophisticated and earth shattering punk rock from NJ, that cannot be easily categorized, but can be easily enjoyed. For fans Luther and the Menzingers.

The Attack | Rise Sing Deliver | 7
The Attack brings Punk back to basics; short, fast riffing songs about the social, music, and media driven politics of today. The simplicity of punk has been lost on a divided underground driven more by fashion and ruled by icons that have become the same rock stars the punk movement rebelled against in the seventies. Across the country everything Punk, from all ages shows to Facebook accounts, has become a popularity contest that defies the original intent of the alternative music scene. The Attack is ruled by a DIY ethos and driven by a goal to re-unite the punks and skins and hardcore kids under the same underground flag. The Attacks lyrics are true shot from all sides anthems. The Attack never panders to one political party or music scene forming an opinion, agenda and sound of its own.
This EP is bundled with a custom 45 adapter, and comes in a sequentially numbered screen printed sleeve w/ download code. GTIN(UPC/EAN/ISBN): 823819137312 Label: Paper + Plastick SKU: EI004

PROGRESSIVE ROCK
RATING 15.5
Oblivion Sun is an offspring of Happy the Man, featuring guitarist/vocalist Stanley Whitaker and keyboardist/reed player Frank Wyatt (the album was mixed by HTM Moog guru Kit Watkins). Both alums play at the top of their game, which says something as both have been dealing with cancer scares these last few years. In fact, Wyatt underwent surgery shortly after the album was recorded which, thankfully, he has recovered from successfully. David Hughes (bass/vocals) and Bill Brasso (drums/percussion) complete the quartet, bringing a true love of progressive music to their enviable roles.
The album opens with two instrumentals, “Deckard” by Wyatt and “March of the Mushroom Men” by Whitaker. Both have that classic Happy the Man sound: elegant but powerful playing, tuneful melodies with plenty of left turns, and a sheer musicality that serves the songs vs. simply emphasizing chops. The cream of this album, though, is the six-part 22-minute title track, penned by Wyatt. All the parts feature Whitaker’s strong vocals, and all the solos by Whitaker and Wyatt (both on synthesizer and acoustic piano) are exceptional. – JASON M. RUBIN
