The Suspects | DCxPC Live Vol. 52

Description

Recorded on December 29, 1995, Live at the Black Cat captures Washington, DC punk band The Suspects at the height of their powers. After beginning with audiences of only 25 or 30 people, the band had grown into one of the city’s leading punk acts, sharing stages with the Ramones, Rancid and Fear. More than 800 people packed the Black Cat for this sold-out year-end show with Aus-Rotten, Attica 9 and Positive State, and The Suspects delivered a fierce 12-song set filled with speed, urgency and raw energy. Determined to preserve the night properly, sound engineer Doug Kallmeyer built an ambitious 16-track setup around a one-inch Ampex 499 Grand Master Gold tape reel, giving every instrument, drum and cymbal dedicated microphones. The result was far beyond a basic room recording, but the work required to edit and mix the performance led the band to shelve it while they focused on their second studio album. The Suspects disbanded in 2000, and the tape remained untouched for nearly three decades. In 2026, longtime fan Porter of The Goons helped transfer the reels to digital and mixed the rediscovered performance, revealing a recording whose power and clarity had survived remarkably well. Across songs including “Graveyard,” “Pistol Whipped,” “No Escape,” “Mind Control,” “Catfish,” “Emotional Blackmail” and “Riot,” the album captures the sharp attack and momentum that made The Suspects a force in the 1990s DC scene. Mastered by Joshua Dobbs at Danger Room Recording Service and finally released by DCxPC Live, this album is more than an archival live set: it is a time capsule from a vital period in DC punk history and a document of a band, a venue and a scene at full force. Its stark black-and-silver packaging draws on the original show flyer and archival live photography. The limited pressing features all 12 songs on metallic silver 12-inch vinyl, a numbered jacket, and a photo-packed 12-by-24-inch insert documenting the band and the crowd. Only 300 copies were pressed.
