On the Water is a Philadelphia-based band rooted in the DIY scene. They are returning in 2025 with their first full-length album in a decade. Their sound fuses chamber folk and classical elements with heavy metal energy and multi-instrumental experimentation. Lead vocalist Fletcher VanVliet’s dynamic vocal delivery and intricate song structures, supported by the band’s complex arrangements, create a distinct musical identity. Since forming in 2008 as a nine-piece acoustic folk collective, the band has evolved into a heavier incarnation with a simplified lineup.

The name “On the Water” stems from a mistranslation of VanVliet’s Dutch surname, symbolizing openness to life’s flow–a philosophy embraced throughout their musical exploration. The lineup includes drummer Lucas Carine, bassist Aubrey VanVliet, lead guitarist Robin Carine, cellist Evan McGonagill, and multi-instrumentalist Jesse Sparhawk. Together, they’ve crafted a unique blend of country, folk, psychedelia, progressive rock, and heavy metal over 17 years.

In 2015, their second full-length album, “Cordelia,” marked a significant shift from jaunty acoustic sounds to darker, more introspective themes. Since then, the band has toured and released several EPs, culminating in their new release, “Return.” This album addresses various topics from personal struggles like divorce and identity to broader issues such as climate change and the chaos of modern life. VanVliet’s lyrics reflect reverence for nature and highlight humanity’s disconnection, all explored through a surreal lens reminiscent of Lynchian themes. “Return” embodies a journey of introspection as the band navigates the complexities of existence.
