Long before viral internet videos turned felines into the undisputed overlords of digital culture, the novelty record industry had already spent decades exploiting the surreal hilarity of recorded animal sounds. From the pitch-shifted studio trickery of Ross Bagdasarian’s Chipmunks in the 1950s to the bizarre pop-culture phenomenon of Don Charles’s “Singing Dogs,” vinyl grooves have historically served as a canvas for eccentric sonic gimmicks. El Gato / Fuzzy Wuz She steps directly into this lineage of absurdity, delivering a delightfully deadpan 7″ single that pairs feline “vocalizations” with the distinctive guitar work of downtown NYC underground veteran Mark Dagley. Best known for his pivotal role in the late-70s art-punk scene (The Girls) and 80s avant-blues (Hi Sheriffs of Blue). The arrangement frames the feline soloist, the titular El Gato, on side A with flamenco guitar accompaniment while treating the meows, purrs with high seriousness. On side B, Frick the Cat is joined by two other felines as the girl group Fuzzy Wiz She for total caterwauling. The result is a hilarious piece of vinyl outsider art: part sonic prank, part genuine homage to the novelty record canon, and subversively charming. This item even crossed over into mainstream pop-culture oddity status when it caught the attention of Cat Fancy magazine, which famously highlighted the 7″ as an essential holiday gift for the discerning feline enthusiast. Whether approached as an arch conceptual statement, an extension of Dagley’s garage-punk pedigree, or simply the ultimate stocking stuffer for cat lovers, El Gato / Fuzzy Wuz She stands as a brilliant, playful footnote in physical media history proving that purr-fection and punk rock were never mutually exclusive.
