DCxPC Live Vol. 11 Presents The Ratchet Boys is a raw and energetic live album that brings back the infectious energy of DC’s late 90s ska scene. Originally recorded in 2000 at the Corner Kick and Velvet Lounge, this release captures the chaos, fun, and community spirit that defined The Ratchet Boys. Known for their high-energy performances, relentless crowd interaction, and legendary Krispy Kreme donut-throwing antics, the band was a staple of the local ska and punk scene. At the heart of it all was lead singer Dan Hess, whose passion for ska music and commitment to the DIY scene helped build a thriving music community. As one of the main forces behind Rude in DC Productions and dcska.com, Dan worked tirelessly to give young musicians and local bands a space to perform. His legacy is deeply ingrained in every track of this record, as his stage presence and ability to engage a crowd were unmatched. This album, now available on vinyl for the first time, brings that energy back to life, allowing fans both old and new to experience The Ratchet Boys as they were meant to be heard—live and loud. With a lineup that included a full horn section and a rhythm section that could keep a dance floor moving all night, The Ratchet Boys embodied the best of ska’s upbeat and rebellious nature. Songs like “Montoya” feature catchy hooks that stay in your head for days, while tracks like “Brave New World” bring a sharp lyrical edge to the mix. Their cover of “One Step Beyond” pays homage to both Madness and Prince Buster, showcasing their love for ska’s roots. This release isn’t just about nostalgia—it’s about keeping the spirit of live ska and punk alive. Every purchase of this album supports cancer research in honor of Dan Hess, who passed away from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2007. DCxPC Live is dedicated to preserving the energy of live music, and this album is a testament to that mission. It’s more than just a collection of songs; it’s a piece of DC ska history and a tribute to the friendships, music, and moments that defined an era. This record ensures that The Ratchet Boys’ legacy, their music, and their impact on the scene will never be forgotten, giving new generations a chance to experience the raw joy and energy they brought to every performance.
